Dear Doug,
Welcome to another GREAT issue of Peak Fitness News. We've got an information packed issue this month as we transition from summer to fall.
With summer officially windingdown, it's been a beutiful summer in Wisconsin of golf, cookouts and festivals, fish-fry's and visiting all the popular Lake CountryRestaurant's.
Meanwhile, with fall upon us, the kids are gearing up for school, the Pack is back and the Badgers are gearing up for a run for roses.
Manypeople "take the summer off" from health, fitness and living an activelifestyle and boy does it show. Maybe you've even taken "a few yearsoff" from being active?
Are you 10 pounds heavier afterswearing this is the summer you'd be active? Are you 20 - 30 poundsheavier after taking a few years off? Have those cookouts, blockparties and golf outings taken their tole on your waist line?
Maybe it's that new baby, the kids or the corporate rat-race that have caused you to gain unwanted body fat?
Don't worry, there is a solution and it's revealed in this months newsletter.
Enjoy.

How To Get Fat Eating SUBWAY.
|
Was Jared Lying?
You'veprobably heard of Jared Fogle - he's the guy that lost over 200 poundsby only eating at Subway. His amazing story captured the attention ofpeople all around the world. Here it is in a nutshell:
It all started March of 1998 when Jared was a college student witha problem. His weight had skyrocketed to 425 pounds. Now that's a lotof weight for anyone to handle, let alone a busy college student. SoJared made the decision to change his life.
He knew the weight would come off with the help of a healthy, lowfat diet. Luckily for him there was a Subway restaurant located nearhis apartment. His plan was brilliant in its simplicity. Everyday heate the same thing:
- Breakfast - coffee
- Lunch - "I atethe 6-inch turkey, tons of vegetables, including hot peppers and a bitof spicy mustard." He left off the mayonnaise and cheese and had a bagof Baked Lays=AE potato chips and a diet soft drink
- Dinner - Footlong veggie sub - again no mayonnaise or cheese.
I'm sure you know the rest of the story. The Subway diet, alongwith exercise, got Jared to shed the extra weight until he was a lean190 pounds (the guy is 6'2"), and he became a spokesperson for Subway, sharing his story and inspiring millions of people.
Subway then became synonymous with healthy eating.
Ever look at a Subway napkin? It lists 7 of their sandwiches thathave 6 grams of fat or less. Then at the bottom it shows you analternative. The Big Mac and the Whopper, burgers that hold 31 and 40grams of fat, respectively.
Wow, Subway is much healthier, right? Well, yes and no.
First read the small print. The 7 sandwiches with 6 grams of fat orless are calculated with only bread, veggies and meat. So if you takeyour sandwich with cheese, mayonnaise, and oil (and really, other thanJared, who doesn't?) then you need to recalculate the numbers.
Here, I'll do it for you, using a 6" Roasted Chicken Breast sandwich as an example.
| Food Item |
Fat |
Calories |
| 6" Sandwich (bread, veggies and meat) |
6 |
342 |
| Cheddar Cheese (2 slices) |
5 |
60 |
| 1 Tbl Mayonnaise |
12 |
110 |
| 1 Tbl Oil |
15 |
135 |
| Totals: |
38g Fat |
647 Calories |
Let's not forget the tempting side items are that so often picked up in the Subway line:
| Food Item |
Fat |
Calories |
| Wild Rice with Chicken Soup |
11 |
210 |
| 1oz Bag of SunChips |
6 |
140 |
| Chocolate Chip cookie |
10 |
210 |
| Totals: |
27g Fat |
560 Calories |
And just like that your 'healthy' Subway sandwich grew into a meal with fat and calorie totals that rival a Big Mac meal.
Now I know you probably don't get all of the extras when you visit Subway but, quite frankly, that isn't the point.
The point is that there is danger in classifying any restaurant as 'healthy'.
The truth is that you could gain weight eating anywhere, just likeyou could lose weight eating anywhere. It all comes down to maintaininga balanced diet with a reasonable calorie and fat intake.
Jared lost weight by drastically cutting calories and fat from hisdiet and by starting an exercise program. You too could do this atSubway or any other restaurant. But eating at Subway does not mean thatyou will walk out leaner and healthier.
It all comes down to choices.
Everyday you make choices that directly affect your weight and yourhealth. Should you get mayonnaise on your sandwich? What harm will onecookie do? Will skipping your workout today really make a difference?
You get to decide.
At some point we all reach a breaking point. For Jared it washitting 425 pounds. For you it may be when you have to buy the nextsize up. Or when you find your body riddled with aches and pains. Orwhen you're shocked by the number on the scale.
Sooner or later you will decide that you are worth it. Youwill decide that your health is important. You will decide that youdeserve to look great. And you will do what it takes to achieve amazingresults.
I'm here to help you do just that. Call or email today to getstarted on an exercise program that will change your body and yourlife...just like Jared.

Julies Story:
I came to Peak in January of 2007 after trying numerous other fitness options, incuding Jazzercise, Group Exercise Classes, Diets and everything in between. Of the other things I tried, I just didn't get the results I watned. After years of frustration, a friend, Lynelle Calwarts referred me to Peak.
I came in to tryout a group workout session with Doug and it was great. I immediatley felt the
personalized nature of the studio and could tell it was different than the health clubs I've been to in the past.
During the first trial workout, I've experienced a combination of strength training, cardio and core conditioning that I've never had before. Every other fitness class I'd taken focused on one aspect of fitness, where as Peak combined everything into an intense, focused and effiecent 45 minute workout.
The efficiency of the workout really impressed me too. With kids at home and a hectic schedule, I like the fact that I can be in and out of Peak, get a great workout and go on with my day.
I also really liked the personalized attention the Peak trainers give me, even though I do group session's, every exercise is adjusted for me, my abilities and my goals. Since my first trial session, every minute of every workout has been focused on acheiving my goals. The trainers really push me to alway's
do better, even when I don't feel like it and want to give up, they alway's push me to acheive more than I think I can.
The results have been fantastic. I actually have people stopping me and noticing how great I look and they alway's ask what I'm doing. My husband has also noticed that my body has changed, which makes me feel good.
As a mom, it's great to be able to be active with my kids and I can keep up with them, while many other parents sit on the sidelines.
It's been worth every penny.

Fish Oils...The New "Magic Pill"?
|
Breaking News...
The latest research on fish oil shows that it might just be the next "wonder drug".
The only problem: it'snot a drug the pharmaceutical industrycan make money off of, so most people just don't know about it.
Fish oil has been shown in valid, scientific research to:
1)Act as ananti-inflammatory
2)Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and heartattack
3)Aid in depression
4)Reduce violent tendencies and anger
5)Regulate cholesterol
6)Help burn body fat!
7)Reduce affects of Alheimer'sdisease
The recommended amount of fish oil consumption by theAmerican Heart Association is 1 gram daily. Most athletes and vigorous exercisers take 3-5 grams daily and noticeincreased recovery capabilities.
Peak Performance recommends (and I personally use) the Prograde line of fish (and krill)oil, called EFA Icon.

Destroying the Dogma

Courtesy of Mike Boyle
As we mentioned previously, the secret to fat loss obviously lies indiet. However, a proper exercise program can greatly magnify theresults of a good nutrition program. How many times have you heard,"Just get twenty minutes of exercise three times a week?" This is agross oversimplification.
The "experts" have said that it is simply amatter of getting your heart rate up into the "fat burning zone." If you have been reading this series, you will know by now that ideas like "fat burning zone" and "target heart rate"are the urban myths of exercise physiology. The key to exercise for fatloss lies in a combination of strength training and interval training.

Fitness is a journey - not a destination. I thought of this quote the other day and noticed something interesting in regards to those clients who have achieved the greatest success with our programs.
I've been fortunate during the past four years since opening Peak to have the opportunity to help over 367 Lake Country residents lose weight, increase energy and acheive their health and fitness goals - while changing their lives!
What I've realized is that those who are absolutely 100% commited to acheiving their goals, those who invest in their health and wellness month after month, showing up for training sessions even when they
absolutely don't want to, routinely making up missed sessions, all the while realizing acheiving success in fitness and life is about creating a specific lifestyle - they use fitness as a vehicle to acheive a greater sense of well-being, a greater sense of personal happiness, confidence, energy and a greater sense of what it takes to live life and live it well!
Success comes to those who are willing to do what others won't!
Are you willing?
Stay Strong,
